I’ll start this out by saying I think its going to be all right but I was seriously worried for a bit. You see I play soccer on two teams, a women’s and a coed. So far this season, neither team has won a single game! For my woman’s team it may be longer than one season and I’m not exactly sure what the problem is. We used to win but now we can barely score. Our scores look something like 0-3, 0-7, 1-8… My coed team is a much stronger and, dare I say, better team. The men are excellent and the women players are fantastic. I’m mediocre but they compensate for me. I really like playing with them but this season we have lost every single game. All by 1 stinking point!…..2-3, 4-5, 1-2. We were cursed.
One of the girls on our team needed some subs to help out on a different team on Saturday and since I had little to do I agreed to play. I played three games on Saturday and lost every freaking game. On top of losing every single game, I broke 3 toenails of my right foot, 1 on my left and had just got a $30 pedicure.
I might have gotten awake up call that I’m just not a fit as I used to be because my body hurt Saturday night. My groin hurt (do I have a groin?). My legs could barely hold me up.
I’m pondering my soccer career Saturday night over a bottle of Merlot. I’m hurt and dejected and I come to the conclusion that the only common denominator for these loses is me! It’s the only rational explanation. I make my mind up that I’ll sit out my next two games and see if the teams win without me. If they do, than I would have to do the only honorable thing, throw myself on my sword. Ok not really that but I would have to quit my teams and go play for the competition. It would only be fair.
Sunday morning I woke up and stumbled to the arena a lot sore and a little hung over (maybe it was the other way around). My coed team appears to be short on women so I decide to play. And guess what!?!?!?!?! We won!!!!! Not only did we win but it was a butt kicking!!! So what if they were short one guy, so what if they didn’t have any subs, so what if they scored first. We won! We broke the 1 point curse. Its not all my fault why my teams keep losing. I even got to score. Twice! I don’t have to go play for the competition.
I think that win has helped break the mental block I’ve had on winning. I think it’s the same issue my beloved Mavs have and will hopefully overcome this season.
I did hear something funny playing Saturday. We lost two games in row and dog tired with one more game to go and one of the guy says, “Well soccer is like sex, you don’t have to be any good at it to have fun.” Amen! Thank God I’m at least getting soccer! |
